Lychee Software is Now Torus Labs
Dec 16, 2010
Lychee Software is no more! We have changed our name to Torus Labs. After several months as "Lychee Software", we started to realize the many shortcomings of the name. According to the dictionary, Lychee, Lichi, Litchi, and Lichee are all valid English spellings of the word, which posed a problem for people trying to find our company website. There are two valid pronunciations: LIE-chi and LEE-chi, so we never knew how to pronounce the name. Many people hadn't heard of the fruit and didn't know what the name meant (so sad!), or knew about the fruit and thought we were an Asian company (not that there's anything wrong with that, but we're not). The word "Lychee" didn't relate to what we do, and the word "Software" pigeonholed us into making & selling software, which would be a problem if we were to... say... started selling pizzas ;) So from now on, we're Torus Labs. We like the name: the spelling & pronunciation are unambiguous, "Torus" relates (albeit loosely) to our graphics expertise, and "Labs" is a word that can stay with us if we ever start doing more than just software.
